The very first Marikeño Photowalking Tour was held on February 22, 2014, at around 2:00 PM, with participants gathering at Freedom Park in Sta. Elena. It was a memorable experience for Marikeño, providing a wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with many of our followers. While most participants were residents of Marikina, others were visitors, and some had only recently moved to the city.
The event was open to all Marikeño followers and was organized with a simple goal: to help fellow Marikeños become more familiar with the city's rich history, culture, and heritage. By introducing participants to the places, food, and people that helped shape Marikina into the progressive and thriving city it is today, we hoped to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for our hometown.
To enrich the experience, we coordinated with the Marikina Office of Tourism and requested a representative to provide historical and cultural insights throughout the tour. We were fortunate to have Oliver Fulinara and Sally Manuel serve as our tour guides for the day.
Although we had anticipated around a hundred participants, attendance fell short of that number. Nevertheless, the event proved to be both enjoyable and successful, leaving lasting memories for everyone involved.
Below is the itinerary of our first Marikeño Photowalking Tour.
2:55 PM – Quick stop at Cityhood Park.
- 3:15 PM – Brief stop outside the Aglipay Church (Iglesia Filipina Independiente) within the Public Market area.
- 3:30 PM – Snack break at Estela's Goto, followed by a pass-by at Lola Helen.
- 4:00 PM – Stop at the Marikina River Office. Discussion about the Marikina Bridge, Roman Garden, and the Marikit statue.
- 4:20 PM – Walk along C. Cruz Street, passing by Mama Ting's and Macky's.
- 4:30 PM – Brief stop at Kapitan Moy. Discussion about the Our Lady of the Abandoned Church.
- 4:45 PM – Brief stop at the Shoe Museum (museum entry not included).
- 5:00 PM – Pasalubong stop along Mabini Street for puto and kutsinta.
- 5:15 PM – Pass by the Marikina Public Library and make a short stop outside Teatro Marikina.
- 5:30 PM – Walk along Shoe Avenue.
- 5:45 PM – End of the tour at the rear of the Marikina Municipal Hall, facing the Bulwagan ng Katarungan.
- 3:00 PM – Brief stop at the mural in front of the Marikina Public Market.
The tour was both educational and enjoyable. As we explored the streets of Marikina, took photographs, and met fellow participants, the experience felt less like a formal tour and more like a leisurely stroll with close friends and family. It was a wonderful opportunity to discover the city from a new perspective while sharing stories and creating lasting memories.
The first-ever Marikeño Photowalking Tour was a resounding success. More than just a walk around the city, it was a celebration of Marikina's history, culture, and community spirit. It was an experience that reminded us why we are proud to call ourselves Marikeños.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us on this memorable journey, as well as to the Marikina Tourism Office for their invaluable support in making the tour both informative and enjoyable. Special thanks also go to JM Macabeo for the wonderful photographs featured in this article.
