Marikeño: A Timeline of Growth (2006–Present)

The following timeline is based on information published by Marikeño and other publicly available records. While many milestones are documented directly, some are drawn from the platform's visible growth and evolution over the years.

2006 – The Beginning of an Idea

The idea for Marikeño was conceived in 2006 when its founder, Wencel Angeles, envisioned a platform dedicated to showcasing the beauty, culture, history, food, and tourism of Marikina City.

In its earliest form, Marikeño content was not yet hosted on a dedicated website. Instead, initial posts were shared through Wencel’s earlier blog, Biyaheng Pinoy, a travel blog that highlighted the beauty of different places through words and photographs, before the Marikeño platform formally took shape.

The inspiration for the project came from the Marikina Citizens’ Factbook, a publication that featured the city’s heritage, landmarks, and attractions. What began as a simple passion project would eventually evolve into one of Marikina’s most recognized digital media platforms.

2007 – Marikeño Goes Online

Marikeño officially launched as a standalone website and blog in 2007. Content previously published on Biyaheng Pinoy featuring Marikina was later curated and transferred to the new independent platform, marking the birth of Marikeño as its own identity.

One of its earliest posts, dated August 6, 2007, welcomed readers and encouraged fellow Marikeños to share their own stories, photographs, and discoveries about the city. Early content focused on Marikina’s landmarks, culture, history, and heritage sites, including the historic Kapitan Moy Building and other notable destinations.

2008–2010 – Building a Local Audience

Over the next several years, Marikeño steadily gained readers through articles featuring: local food establishments, heritage and historical sites, festivals and community events and Marikina's renowned shoemaking industry

At a time when local blogging had yet to gain recognition, Marikeño became one of the few platforms consistently documenting stories and places in Marikina that often received little attention from mainstream media.

2011–2014 – Expanding to Social Media (Birth of Keno, the Mascot)

As social media transformed the digital landscape, Marikeño expanded beyond traditional blogging and established a growing presence on Facebook.

This transition introduced Marikeño to a wider audience and transformed it from a website into a thriving online community.

A significant milestone came in 2014 with the introduction of KENO, the first official Marikeño mascot. Keno symbolized the platform's evolution from a personal blog into a recognizable community brand.

2015–2019 – Becoming a Marikina Digital Brand

During this period, Marikeño evolved into one of the city's most visible independent digital platforms.
Coverage expanded beyond history and tourism to include:
Local businesses
Restaurants and cafés
Community stories
Cultural and heritage destinations
City events and attractions

As its audience continued to grow, many businesses and organizations began seeking features and collaborations, recognizing Marikeño's influence within the local community.

2020–2022 – Serving the Community During the Pandemic

The pandemic highlighted the importance of digital community platforms. Throughout this challenging period, Marikeño continued promoting local businesses, sharing community updates, and helping residents discover products, services, and establishments that remained operational. Its role expanded beyond tourism and heritage promotion into becoming a valuable community resource.

2023 – The Arrival of Mari (the 2nd Mascot)

In 2023, Marikeño introduced its second official mascot, MARITogether, Mari and Keno became symbolic representatives of the Marikeño community, reflecting the platform's welcoming and family-oriented spirit.

2024–Present – Beyond Blogging

Today, Marikeño operates across multiple digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, TikTok, Threads, X (formerly Twitter), and its official website.

Its activities now extend far beyond blogging and content creation, encompassing:
Photowalking tours
Community events
Tourism advocacy
Heritage awareness campaigns
Local business promotion

The launch of MarikeñoPLUS also expanded coverage to neighboring cities while keeping Marikina at the heart of its mission.

The Bigger Picture

What makes Marikeño's journey remarkable is that it began with a simple desire: to help more people appreciate Marikina. From a simple dream to share his love for his city, to a small personal blog launched in 2007, it has grown into one of the longest-running and most recognizable independent digital media platforms focused on the city. Through nearly two decades of growth and change, Marikeño has remained guided by the same mission—to celebrate and promote Marikina's people, culture, history, food, tourism, and local businesses.

As Marikeño approached its twentieth year, its story continues to be written: one photograph (or reel), one story, and one Marikeño at a time.
